When I was younger I struggled at taking tests more often than not, and I was not sure why. I would do all the homework, and be really proficient at the skill on my own, but as soon as the test was handed out I would freeze up. Overtime I learned some very effective ways to test that will help you score higher on exams and pass them without hesitation. Some of the tips that helped me the most are:
Staying Ahead In Your Class
This one is a given, but it’s so simple sometimes people forget about it. If you miss a day or two, it is paramount that you talk to your professor about how you can make up the work and learn it. Most teachers have office hours where they are available for students to come and visit them, so this is a valuable resource that will allow you to catch up if you’re behind, or even to learn the lesson more intuitively! One thing I learned from school is it’s always easier to stay ahead than to catch up.
Study, Study, Study!
How many times have you studied until you finally got something right, and then you quit for the day? Probably quite a few, I know I was guilty of this for a while. When this happens, you have to keep studying because that means that you are finally starting to understand it, but you can’t stop there. You must continue to study it until you cannot get it wrong, once you have reached this level it is so much easier to take the exam. When you’ve built this level of understanding, it becomes impossible for you to get it wrong, and this will ensure you success of the exam.
Find Out What You Will Be Tested On
There is nothing wrong with asking your professor about what you will be tested on. They will often have a list for their students that says the exact skills that you will need in order to ace the exam. This is a simple step that will allow you to study all of the content that will be asked on the test, and that’s a surefire way to ensure that you are prepared for the exam.
Get A Good Night’s Sleep
A lot of students between their homework, social life, and additional activities will end up being deprived of sleep. Sleep is one of the things that our bodies simply cannot live without, so it’s tremendously important that you give your body sufficient rest so that it can perform at its peak level.
Find Out What Type of Learner You Are
This is a bonus step that will allow you to be more efficient when studying for a test. There are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. Visual learners are better with pictures or flash cards, auditory is better at actively listening to their content, while kinesthetic learners prefer to be physically active somehow while learning. If you can find out which one of these works best for you, it will certainly allow you to have higher quality study sessions, which will help you pass exams with flying colours!
